Get in touch

I am glad to hear from people working on the same problems. A line of context about who you are and what you are after will get a faster and more useful reply than a calendar invitation.

Before you write

What tends to get a reply

Not a set of rules so much as an honest account of where my attention actually goes.

Usually yes

  • Speaking on engineering leadership, organisational design and platform strategy.
  • Advisory conversations with founders and engineering leaders.
  • Correspondence about something I have written here — including disagreement.
  • Introductions to people working on genuinely hard organisational problems.

Usually no

  • Unsolicited vendor pitches and generic partnership outreach.
  • Requests to review, promote or endorse products I have not used.
  • Anything that begins by telling me what my own priorities are.

On response times

I answer mail in batches rather than continuously. If something is genuinely time-sensitive, say so in the subject line and I will move it forward.
